Enjoy, Practice, Inspire

 

     We have likely heard of many students who have taken music lessons and quit because they hated it, yet later wishing they had continued.  When I teach, I first let students enjoy music, which makes them want to practice, which inspires themselves and others, which makes them enjoy playing!  Then it becomes a cycle which repeats itself over and over again. 

 

     However, it only becomes enjoyable when you are actually proficient, hence why practice is important regardless.   Most students (including adult students!) still need a little push.  It is a very important balance to keep the music relevant and with appropriate rigor.  The key is constant communication between myself, students, and parents.

     I truly work with individuals to highlight their talents, interests, and learning styles.  Whatever your musical goal may be, it is likely I will be able to help you work toward it.  This also varies significantly from young children to high school students to adult students.

• Composition - Writing and performing one's own pieces (or also having someone else premier your works)

• Combining virtuosic classical music with dramatic and emotional movie music

• Capstone/Senior Projects for graduating high school students

• Showcasing students' other non-piano talents in performing other instruments

• Improvising on a theme

• Using sight reading software in the lesson to raise your sight reading level

• Students bringing theory to life via projects (rather than just workbooks)

• Creating music videos using video editing and audio editing

• Learning how to play from lead sheets

• Examinations & Competitions (CM, RCM, ABRSM, US Open, JRIVC) | Levels Beginning to Advanced

• Learning to be an accompanist

• Combining jazzy harmonies with classical repertoire

• Learning how to play in a church service

• Learning how to play for a wedding ceremony

 

Connecting with Other Teachers

 

     As a Board member of the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT), Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC), I always strive to give the best to my students and learning from other professionals through attending conferences, etc., will help to broaden my knowledge, connections, and resources and pass it down to my students.

 

Performing Teacher | Giving Back

 

     Share the gift of music.  Music can brighten so many people’s days and should be shared with as many people as possible.   I do believe that music can have very healing properties and post regularly on my YouTube Channel.  Also, performing on a regular basis keeps me on my toes and allows me to remember what it is like to be on the "student" side of things, learning new songs myself.  Various performances by students are also planned at venues throughout the community to spread the joy of music.
